“The Eye of Jupiter” - Episode Recap
So it turns out that the algae planet on the other end of the deadly inferno’s got another important antique on it. No, not Edward James Olmos. The Eye of Jupiter. “It’s supposed to be a marker that points the way to Earth.” It’s just a matter of time before they start running out of important godly artifacts and start scraping the bottom of the barrel. Like, “It’s the Chastity Belt of Vesta. It’s supposed to point the way to Earth.”
Meanwhile, even though they’ve all been getting cuddly in Baltar’s bed, D’Anna seems to be neatly separating Baltar from Caprica Six. Now it’s D’Anna and Baltar on a mystic quest for the Final Five. I wonder why the Six in Baltar’s head hasn’t complained. Maybe she’s gotten over her jealousy issues. Or maybe it’s because she’s losing interest…Gaius Baltar is starting to look less hot mad scientist and more insane Rasputin. Maybe we can call it Mountain Man Chic.
And the Kara and Lee Angst and Misery Show that first debuted in “Unfinished Business” chugs on, and I can’t help but gain more and more sympathy for Anders and Dualla. And although it makes sense in retrospect, it really surprised me to hear Anders imply that Lee’s not the first extramarital fling Starbuck’s had. What a crazy, messed up love triangle…quadrilateral? Maybe it’s a side-effect of waiting two and a half seasons for Lee and Kara to finally get together…maybe it’s been too long and whatever chemistry they had has gone stale. But the whole thing seems more than a little sordid. But that’s probably the point. It certainly goes along nicely with the bleak feel of this season.
Cally and the Chief, on the other hand, and Helo and Sharon, have some nice family moments. It’s good to see what a tight unit Helo and Sharon have become. We saw some of that before, in “Unfinished Business,” with Sharon pumping Helo up before he went in the ring. I just hope discovering that Baby Hera is still alive doesn’t drive a wedge between them. I can imagine Sharon wanting to do absolutely anything to get her baby back…and Helo, who might be one of the most ethical characters on the show, being unwilling to risk hurting his friends and his allies in order to help his wife and child.
And with a nice solid cliffhanger, the show’s officially on hiatus until the new year.

Helo “might be one of the most ethical characters on the show”? Who else is even in the running?

Also: anyone else completely bored with both Lee and Kara, in general? Seriously, just about everyone else in the show has had a better story-arch and stronger characterization for the about the last season.

It’s true…almost all of the other characters seem to be morally compromised in one way or another. Here are my other ethical favs: Gaeta’s done me proud. Anders walking out on the Secret Tribunal of Much Pain and Suffering roxxored. The Chief gets my vote as a generally stand-up guy. And as leaders go in BSG, Adama is the best of the bunch: I’d prefer him to Roslin, Zarek, or Baltar.

And yes, I feel like I’m just about done with Lee and Kara. If I were their parent I’d send them both to separate corners for a while, just to think about how annoying they’ve been lately. Although if I were their parent, that would make them siblings, which would make their relationship pretty frakked up…

Lee was the ultimate stand-up guy in the beginning. It’s interesting how his character has lost some of it’s glory boy luster as the series has progressed. I’m not sick of the Lee/Kara angle unless they kee up this Ross/Rachel hit and miss type crap. That will get old in a hurry. Anders has really blossomed as a character. They’ve really filled him out with personality over the last half of the season.
btw, did you know that Hot Dog is J. E. Olmos’s son? saw the last name in the credits and looked it up. Maybe I’m just behind the power curve on this one
