Lee & Roslin Sitting In a … Ship

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Never been much of a Lee & Roslin Shipper, but I am a long time Annie Lennox fan. This fan tribute to the sexual tensions between the younger Adama and the glorious president of the Twelve Colonies is very well done, and almost enough to convert me to a Lee & Roslin Shipper.

Commentary: Bastille Day

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Today is Bastille Day in France and a good opportunity to comment on “Bastille Day,” the famous prison riot episode from Battlestar Galactica’s first season. Looking back, this was one of the first episodes where the threat from within the fleet loomed as large as the threat of the Cylons, and where viewers started to understand that the challenge of building a stable society after the Cylon attacks was even more daunting than the challenge of simply surviving day to day.

The first episode of the series, “33″ focused on the survival aspect. The second episode, “Water,” introduced viewers to the idea of an internal threat. “Bastille Day” cemented the concept that death and destruction could come from within the fleet as easily as from the Cylons, as there is an intrinsic violence in human nature that even a nuclear holocaust cannot purge.

The Animus of Laura Roslin - Mary McDonnell Q&A

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

I just watched the 9th segment of Mary McDonnell’s Q&A, where she answers questions posted on SciFi’s online forum. Some of them are inane, and some of them are kind of fascinating, like this one:

“Do you wish that Laura had more interaction with other women on the show? It always seems that Laura is only with Adama and Lee.” (more…)

How Battlestar Got It Right

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Spike TV’s been having a Star Trek: Voyager marathon, and like the dutiful nerd I am, I couldn’t help but partake. It reminded me of why I liked the show and why I hated it: I liked it for its potential, mostly, and hated it for what it did with that potential. Although I was (and am, I suppose) a dedicated Trek fan, I didn’t really watch the show after the first couple of years. I started watching it in reruns near the end of its life, and I developed a certain affection for it - the kind of affection you have for a particularly stupid cousin everybody likes but nobody knows what to do with. I also couldn’t help noticing, while watching the marathon, how similar the concept is to Battlestar Galactica. (more…)

Starbuck becomes Stardoe?

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

Here’s a link to a Dirk Benedict fansite where they’ve posted a long, rambling screed from Dirk, the original Starbuck, about why the new BSG totally suxxors. His primary issue seems to be that the old BSG was a show with family values, good guys and bad guys, and no lingerie models, while the new BSG is a show mired in amorality, pessimism, and way too many lingerie models.

The “my Battlestar is better than yours” debate is an old one, so instead of rehashing that I’ll just post this gem from Dirk’s article:

“Women are from Venus. Men are from Mars. Hamlet does not scan as Hamletta. Nor does Han Solo as Han Sally. Faceman is not the same as Facewoman. Nor does a Stardoe a Starbuck make. Men hand out cigars. Women `hand out’ babies. And thus the world, for thousands of years, has gone round.”

Yes, indeed. Although I might pay for a date with Han Sally.

“The Eye of Jupiter” - Episode Recap

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

So it turns out that the algae planet on the other end of the deadly inferno’s got another important antique on it. No, not Edward James Olmos. The Eye of Jupiter. “It’s supposed to be a marker that points the way to Earth.” It’s just a matter of time before they start running out of important godly artifacts and start scraping the bottom of the barrel. Like, “It’s the Chastity Belt of Vesta. It’s supposed to point the way to Earth.” (more…)
