“Caprica” Series - BSG Spinoff for 2007
I was browsing Ron Moore’s entry on IMDB when I saw this.
Apparently Battlestar Galactica merits a spinoff series only three seasons in. It’s called “Caprica,” and it’s essentially a BSG prequel series. According to the IMDB entry, it started life unrelated to BSG and was tied in later. It could be really fascinating, giving us a more detailed picture of what life on Caprica was like before the advent of the Cylons. Maybe, if we’re lucky, we’ll also see the rise of the Cylons and their eventual rebellion. The whole concept brings to mind the Second Renaissance episodes of the Animatrix.
But I’m also a bit nervous. Battlestar seems to be in a bit of a precarious situation right now. Ratings are not as strong as in past seasons; maybe the addition of another show will be oversaturation of a market that’s already losing interest. Also, “Caprica” probably won’t have the dramatic authority BSG has with stars like Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell. The IMDB entry doesn’t say whether “Caprica” will be a miniseries or a continuing series…it might be better as a miniseries. I always liked that about Japanese anime series…they had a story to tell, and once they finished telling it, the series was over. On to the next story.
My other fear is that the Cylons in “Caprica” will look like the old 1970s-style Centurions we saw in the Galactica’s museum in the miniseries. Hopefully they don’t feel they have to take continuity that far.
